The Samoa Aviation and Roads Investment Project seeks to improve the climate resilience and safety of aviation and road infrastructure in Samoa. The project incorporates gray-green flood reduction measures, including mangrove restoration, bioswales, rainwater harvesting, and rain gardens, to enhance resilience and mitigate the impact of extreme weather events.
The Rural Accessibility & Resilience Project aims to increase all-weather road access and improve the resilience of road networks in selected sub-regions. The project incorporates Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) into road construction efforts, enhancing climate resilience and supporting sustainable infrastructure development.
The grant supports Panama City in developing a concept plan for urban and coastal resilience, articulating a comprehensive strategy of public investments and infrastructure financing, aiming to strengthen urban resilience.
The project will fill critical infrastructure gaps in the Integrated Transport Network Development Plan (“ITNDP”) demonstrating use of innovative, climate-informed, safe, and nature-based solutions. It will also invest in innovative, climate resilient, nature-based design and construction solutions for roads and bridges, least-cost-engineering solutions for local infrastructure.
The measures to be integrated in the designs of bridges, roads and river crossings include bioengineering solutions for landslide and erosion protection, drainage systems, and so on. The resilience mainstreaming applies to the entire road under the upgradation works contract, as the road alignment falls in the midst of the Himalayan mountains. The bioengineering solutions and drainage improvement in slide risk locations apply to the roads under maintenance as well.
The project will be doing a feasibility study to propose nature-based solutions, and could include 2.5-3.5 km of hybrid coastal work.
The project is aiming to increase the resilience of two urban areas. This will include green spaces along the Pirai Metropolitan River Park, the development of an integral management plan for the park, and other green buffers along side the Irpavi and orkohauira rivers to prevent flooding and ensure slope stabilization.
